A: Improving soils is difficult, but not impossible. Soils that contain a large amount of clay character have always been a challenge for gardeners. When wet, clay soil tends to be sticky and difficult to work; when dry, the clay soil will be hard and full of lumps. The reason for these properties becomes clear when we examine the particles that make up the soil.

Soils are all composed of particles of sand, silt and clay in different proportions. Clay soil particles are distinguished from larger silt and sand particles by their size alone and not by their chemistry. Where sand particles are visible without magnification, clay particles are so small that they are not visible even under magnification under a light microscope.

If the clay particles were as large as the sand particles, a single sand particle would become roughly the size of a billiard ball. This large difference in particle size is reflected in the resulting soil properties.

Large sand particles lead to a very porous soil which will have large air pockets and will not hold water. Due to the small size of the clay particles, the tiny pieces pile up tightly and the resulting soil has very few air pockets. Due to this tight settlement, water flows very slowly through the clay mass. In addition, plant roots will find it difficult to penetrate such dense soil.

It may seem reasonable that adding sand to clay soil could provide a more exploitable soil. However, this addition alone is more likely to lead to a more cement-like consistency of the floor.

So the best way to improve clay soil is to add organic matter (OM). Compost, leaf mold, animal manure, and green plant material (eg from a cover crop) are particularly effective in modifying the structure of heavy clay soil.

The addition of these organic materials combined with agitation as simple as turning with a garden fork or using a tiller, can form aggregates (clay + OM) which are structurally much larger particles than the ‘clay alone. As a result, the soil will contain relatively large air and water spaces between the particles and the soil will allow easy penetration of plant roots.

As a bonus, the suspended clay particles and organic matter in the aggregates will bind together and release valuable mineral nutrients for your plants, resulting in healthier plants.

Nantwich volunteer gardeners were stunned after thieves stole more than £ 200 of materials from the Growing Health Community Garden project in Brookfield Park.

The flight left the project without 72 basic “Eco-deck” grids, which form the solid platform for the fully accessible garden.

Project managers (on the picture) think someone may have stolen the gates to order them because 72 gates would create difficult parking for a lane.

The volunteer director of the project, Ashleigh Jackson, said the theft was a real blow.

She said: “It is utterly incredible that these thieves are stealing from some of our city’s most vulnerable, the disabled and the unhealthy – and of the tax dollars that helped fund this project.

“We have started to receive referrals from the NHS and inquiries from people wanting to enjoy the benefits of a little gentle gardening in our friendly community.

“We are so close to seeing the garden help improve people’s lives.

“It made this immoral theft all the more hurtful.”

The project was set up by local gardeners last year to create a safe, friendly and fully accessible space where people from all walks of life, especially the sick and disabled, can recuperate and enjoy the benefits of gardening.

He has already overcome obstacles after moving after the floods and battling repeated lockdowns.

It reached the construction stage with local volunteers creating a network of raised beds and wheelchair accessible trails.

The residents of Harrisburg have gathered this week to visit illegal landfills in their neighborhoods and work together to determine who is doing it and how to stop them.

The tour was led by Rafiyqa Muhammad, a longtime city resident and state member Advisory Council on Environmental Justice, which makes recommendations to the State Department of Environmental Protection. She invited residents to the event on Wednesday afternoon in the area of Sixième and Maclay streets after hearing complaints about illegal landfills which sometimes contain hazardous materials.

The type of waste in these landfills is not primarily household waste; instead, the big one appears to be commercial waste such as tires, toilets, construction debris, and hazardous waste.

Muhammad and John Brakeall, regional coordinator for the State Department’s office of environmental justice, hosted the event to hear from residents and coordinate resources that could help tackle this long-standing problem.

Muhammad led a discussion after the tour where she shared some of the excuses she has heard over the years when residents complain about illegal landfills, including blaming residents for the garbage or throwing in “solutions” without asking. first get feedback from the people who live closest to the landfill. sites.
